Planning a Kentucky Family Vacation: Where to Go & Stay
Kentucky is one of the most underrated family destinations in the country: horses, a life-size ark, a world-class zoo and aquarium, and state parks — all within ninety minutes of each other. Here is how to put a trip together.
The Lexington Side: Horses
The Kentucky Horse Park is the anchor: a working horse farm and museum where kids meet champions face to face, watch the Parade of Breeds, and take pony rides. Add a morning at Keeneland — even outside race season, families can watch morning workouts and eat breakfast at the Track Kitchen alongside the jockeys (our Keeneland guide explains how). The Williamstown Side: The Ark
The Ark Encounter is Kentucky’s biggest family draw — a 510-foot ark with three decks of exhibits, a zoo, and playgrounds. Give it a full day, add the Creation Museum on a second day if it is on your list, and use the quiet lake town of Williamstown as your base rather than commuting from the city. The City Day
From Williamstown, the Cincinnati riverfront is about thirty minutes: underwater tunnels at the Newport Aquarium, one of America’s best zoos, riverboat rides, and a minor-league baseball night with the Florence Y’alls. Our Northern Kentucky guide has the full lineup.
A Sample Five-Day Itinerary
Days 1–2, Lexington: Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland morning workouts, a farm tour, downtown dinner.
Day 3: drive an hour north to Williamstown, pool afternoon at the house.
Day 4: the Ark Encounter, evening at the fire pit.
Day 5: Cincinnati day — aquarium or zoo — then home to the hot tub.
